The Johnny Messer Band was formed in the fall of 1981. Their first appearance was at the Mohawk Club in Pulaski, TN. The band played mostly local venues in Lawrence, Giles and Lauderdale counties during the 80’s.The Johnny Messer Band also opened for several concerts held in Lawrence County and Lauderdale County during that time, including such acts as Percy Sledge, The Platters and the Byrds. The band was active from 1981 until 1989 when they finally decided to stop performing. The band members at that time included Johnny Messer on vocals, John Marston on bass, Randy Hartsfield on lead/slide guitar, Randy Littrell on lead/rhythm guitar, Ted Garretson on trumpet, T.R. Williams on drums and Jim Jackson on keyboards. The keyboard player, Jim Jackson passed away in 2005. Several of the band members went on to play in other bands. In May, 2013, the band decided to record a 25 year reunion CD. They began the recording sessions at the new RNRDSS studio located in Loretto, TN owned by Jeff Quillen. For the next several months, they recorded some of the most popular songs they performed in the 80’s along with some more current songs. The cd contains twelve songs which includes the original songs Sundown and You Don’t Deserve and Sarah Jane. Once the songs were recorded, the cd was then sent to The NuttHouse Recording Studio owned by Jimmy Nutt in Sheffield, AL, to be mixed and mastered. The cd was finally released in September, 2014. The 2015 Heritage Festival will be the first live performance for The Johnny Messer Band since 1989. N.C. Thurman will be replacing Jim Jackson on keyboards at the festival. The band will also have some other special guests joining them for the event.
